Stunning nature in the Canary Islands
Plants, animals and the environment
The Canary Islands are stunning with their wonderful topography and volcanic geology: deep valleys, high mountains, steep cliffs – some regions of Gran Canaria appear almost surreal. There are alpine mountain regions at over 1,000 metres above sea level, some existing on 2,000 metres of rugged rock with beautiful little mountain lakes (reservoirs) and villages. It is always an experience to explore Gran Canaria again.
Then again, it is the sand and water that form the character and charm of Gran Canaria. No more so than the ‘Dunas Maspalomas’, a protected natural dune landscape on the southern tip of the island. In addition, there are also a number of secluded coves and valleys that have not yet been completely overrun by tourism.
